「私の国の贈物の習慣、ルール」

　日本でいつでもプレゼントをあげる習慣があるそうです。「お中元」や「お歳暮」等には面白いプレゼントをあげます。でも、シンガポールにはプレゼントの習慣がありません。

　シンガポールでプレゼントじゃなくて、だいたいお金をあげる習慣があります。旧正月のとき、大人が子供にお金をあげることや、結婚のとき、友達や親戚が新婚夫婦にお金をあげることや、お葬式のとき、親戚が亡くなった人の家族にお金をあげること等です。その通り、いつでもお金だけをあげるって、面白くないでしょう。

　どうしていつでもお金しかあげないのか、色々な理由があります。最初、シンガポール人は皆実際的なので、やっぱりお金が一番いいプレゼントだと思っています。次に、お金なら、何も考えなくて、一番簡単なプレゼントです。それから、お金があれば、何でもできると感じそうです。

　お金をあげるルールについて、たくさんのルールがありますが、もっとも大切なルールは、「８の数字がある金額をあげる」と言うルールです。それは、中華の文化に、８の数字はとてもラッキの数字なんです。８の字は中国語の発音で「お金持ちになる」と言う意味ですから。また、「４の数字がある金額は絶対だめだ」と言うルールもあります。４の字は中国語の発音で「死ぬ」と言う意味なので、不吉なんです。できれば、あげない方がいいです。

　このように、シンガポールにおもしろくて変なプレゼントの習慣やルールがありません。おもしろくないんですが、日本の習慣より便利だと思います。私は日本人の場合はいつも誰に各種各様なプレゼントを考えてあげて、面倒くさいでしょう。
